We are committed to improving the health of multicultural/racial and ethnic minority populations, or minority populations. That commitment is -- as demonstrated by the fact that our nationally unique web site is identified by Google as the leading source of "health informaton for minorities", and the second leading source of "minority health information" (led only by the U.S. Office of Minority Health).
Our monthly Web Alerts bring loads of information to improve the physical, mental and spiritual health of minority populations. While I describe several of many web site favorites below, be sure to see the slides from my presentation last summer on "The Aging Brain and What the Faith Community Can Do" at the Annual Conference of the International Association of Ministers Widows", as we have received much positive feedback on the usefulness information on Alzheimer's Disease, other dementias, and approaches to staying mentally healthy.
This web site, launched after several years of service, challenge and learning from the first Health Power web site, as well as related work with many organizations and individuals, provides:
A new look and feel that is consistent with leading contemporary, or current, changes in cyperspace (on the Web);
Authoritative information for disease prevention, early detection and control. This means that information on our web site is carefully researched by our team, as indicated, in order to provide user widely accepted health and medical information;
User-friendly and culturally relevant information and approaches, including:
- What it Means, Our Glossary, which makes it possible for our users to understand what various health related terms mean, without having to read long descriptions with professional or technical terms;
- Food and Fitness Channel, with separate Food and Fitness Branches. The Food Branch contains numerous recipes by type (like breakfast, lunch, soups, salads, etc) by celebrities and other notables, and by cultural specialty (like African American and Caribbean, Hispanic, Asian, and American Indian recipes). Both branches contain easy to read Tip Sheets, on such subjects as:
Shopping Smart, Cooking Good, Eating Healthy;
Weight Control, Wise Drinking, Getting in Shape;
Moving for the Health of it; Walking for Fitness;
Starting an Exercise Routine or Sport
- 5 Racial and Ethnic Channels - African American Channel and its Caribben Circuit, Hispanic/Latino; Asian Pacific Islander and Native Indian/American Indian Channels;
- Our Major Killers and Disablers - Key information on racial and ethnic health disparities (illnesses that result in many multicultural people being sick too long, and/or dying too soon), including: Asthma; Cancer; Diabetes; Heart Disease; Hypertension; HIV/AIDS; Infant Mortality; Obesity; Substance Abuse; and Violence
- What's Happening - Publicizes Key Conferences throughout the year; Job/Position Announcemets; and Other Opportunities and Happenings.
