Anabolic Steriod Use (Abuse)
Steroid Use (Abuse) for Bodybuilding – A process in which certain steroid drugs, called anabolic steroids
are used for bodybuilding purposes or to increase athletic abilities.
The anabolic steroids are very similar to testosterone, the natural
human male hormone. They are usually taken orally or by injection, and
can give the user a competitive edge in sports because of the muscle
growth. There are ethical and safety issues associated with anabolic steroid use.
In spite of the fact that its use is banned by amateur and professional
sports associations, it is considered to continue although the degree
is unknown. Laboratory tests can detect anabolic steroid use up to six (6) months after it has been stopped.
Side effects of anabolic steroid use include:
- high blood pressure
- mood swings
- worsening acne
- aggressiveness
- abnormal liver function or liver tumors
- increased blood cholesterol
- injuries to muscles and tendons
- reduced height in teenagers because of early closure of growth plates
- even death due to improper functioning of major organs
Side effects that are specific in boys and girls are:
In Boys
- no sperm in the semen
- enlarged breasts
- smaller testicles
- increased sexual desire
|
