Topic Details
Arrhythmia
Arrhythmia is any disorder or abnormality
of a person’s heart rate or heart rhythm, such as beating too fast
(tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), or irregularly. Normally, the 4
chambers of the heart (2 atria and 2 ventricles) contract in a very
specific and coordinated way. The electrical impulse that signals the
heart to contract in that coordinated way is the heart's natural
pacemaker. Problems can occur anywhere along the heart’s conduction
system, causing various arrhythmias. More information on arrhythmias is
provided in our
Heart Disease/Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Section.
